DISABILITY AWARENESS

TRAINING

WHAT IS DISABILITY AWARENESS TRAINING?

This training is available both through Access to Work and funded by companies. Training aims to develop and raise awareness of the difficulties faced by people with disabilities and how companies can improve their practices. Training is adapted to each company and its situation. A full consultation is conducted before training is delivered and included in the cost.

   WHAT IS COVERED IN TRAINING?

  • Understanding different disabilities at work

  • Effective language and communication

  • Avoiding unintentional discrimination

  • Access and Inclusion

  • Effective mentoring and supervision

  • Practical ways to support disabled employees and customers

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Training is useful for all staff, at all levels. It will help them to understand, evaluate and  develop their responsibilities to disabled staff and customers.

Outcomes for different staff members:

  • HR and training  personnel - Development of policies, staff retention

  • Senior Management - Fostering positive culture towards disability and grievance reduction

  • Department and Section managers - Effective management and empowerment of disabled staff

  • Team members - fostering better working relationships

  • Customer-facing Staff - providing better service and company reputation

HOW DOES TRAINING BENEFIT COMPANIES AND EMPLOYEES?

Research shows that staff who receive regular training feel empowered and confident in their work, and are more productive and loyal. (Christos and Pitelis, 2014)

Training also reduces possible grievances and improves a company's reputation through better dealings with the public.

Furthermore, it is also likely to help increase the retention of disabled staff as they feel included and valued in the company, reducing skill loss and hiring costs.

HOW TO ACCESS TRAINING?

Training can be provided through access to work funding related to an individual worker or commissioned privately by the company as a stand-alone service.
